The ISTD set a brief to create a typography-based project that highlights one of the UN's sustainable development goals. The approach this project takes is a website aimed at young people to get them interested in learning about the ocean and find ways to help it in a fun and engaging way. The website becomes a story connecting the audience with the animals in the ocean and then explaining what is happening, and how to help.
With typography at the forefront of this project, a lot of work went into type research landing on this more entertaining type face appropriate for the target audience. It has an organic feel emphasising the emotional connection to the water animals. There was also large amounts of experimentation with imagery using water and household items that get washed into the oceans and are a danger to wildlife, mostly plastic. These images were then edited to look vaster and more intense. Illustration coupled with this well to represent the wildlife in the ocean.
The outcome is a website alongside a poster to market the website and become a plea for help. It is more about hope than instilling fear, especially for the young audience. The intention is to empower them to help and give them a connection to the ocean that makes them want to help. A guidelines document was also created for the website.
